Groundbreaking jobs

Monday’s groundbreaking for the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) was good news in itself, but one announcement made it even better.
A new advanced composites company, spun off from research conducted at North Carolina A&T State University, will be the first corporate tenant at Gateway University Research Park’s South Campus.
Advaero Technologies, Inc., will develop applications for high-strength, lightweight carbon composite materials. The company is developing parts for the military’s CH-46 helicopters which will replace heavier aluminum components. Another application under development are blades for wind turbines, says Gregory L. Bowers, president & CEO. He came to Guilford County 13 years ago as an executive with the pharmaceutical company, Banner. Advaero Technologies will locate in the existing building on the Lee Street campus.
Currently, turbine blades are limited to lengths that can be transported by truck. Advaero plans to make larger wind turbine blades on site, in temporary buildings constructed in often-remote wind fields. This will allow the installation of larger, more efficient wind-generating equipment.
Advaero Technologies will begin with about five employees chiefly engaged in research and engineering. The company also plans opportunities to engage students in its operations, Bowers said.
Coming soon: More news about jobs at JSNN, these fromĀ a second company headed by Bowers and developed from research conducted at UNCG. Helical Sciences has developed a rapid test to detect pathogens and other contaminants in water, foods and beverages.
Forward-thinking Greensboro leaders for years have talked about public-private partnerships, technology transfer, and leveraging the many assets created by our colleges and universities.
These new companies, and the jobs they will create, are just the beginning.
