One of our challenges at Action Greensboro is including the widest variety of viewpoints in the conversation about how more and better-paying jobs can become available for the citizens of Greensboro.  The suggestion has been made that, because of my particular vantage point as the first and last person you see when you visit Action Greensboro, I should put occasional posts on Springboard.

I was skeptical about this idea at first.  It seemed to me that many of the local blogs get readership by dealing in negatives and “gotcha” politics.  I’m a major fan of the First Amendment, so I defend to the death the right to air complaints on blogs.  I enjoy conversing with people who disagree with me–as long as they’ve started with accurate facts, considered them with an open mind, and come to honest conclusions.  But I don’t want to spend my time fending off accusations or debating insinuations.

When I need unprovoked attacks, there’s a Siamese fighting fish named Bruce in a bowl on my desk.  (My co-worker Cecelia gave him to me when what I really wanted was a hamster.)  Bruce is kind of belligerent, but he’s also very curious.  His first question is always the same, “What’s in it for me?”  I’m hoping to teach him that it’s more fitting to ask what he can do for his country, but as a practical matter I have very little leverage over him.  He has to get the same amount of food every day or get sick and die.  But he does make an excellent devil’s advocate, so I see a promising future for Bruce on Springboard.
