Greensboro – the municipality – just took a big step toward living up to its name.
Pepco Energy Services is installing energy-efficient light bulbs, solar water heaters and low-flow toilets that are guaranteed to save the city $484,000 a year over the next 13 years. Big-ticket items, such as chillers and air-handling units for air conditioning, also are part of the package.
Greensboro has a $6.1 million energy performance contract with Pepco Energy Services, which is based in Arlington, Va. The deal stipulates that if the city does not realize the guaranteed savings, Pepco pays the city back.
More details in today’s News & Record.
The city’s January news release says Greensboro’s action will eliminate 11 million pounds of carbon dioxide annually, which is “the equivalent of planning more than 1,700 acres of trees.”
