Brenda Schleunes
Sometimes, with all the concern about attracting the creative class to Greensboro, we need a reminder that our community already has a solid foundation of creative folks. One of them, Brenda Schleunes, was duly honored last night with the O. Henry Award.
Schleunes is founder and producing artistic director of the Touring Theatre of North Carolina. From her commendation, presented by the United Arts Council in cooperation with the Greensboro Partnership:
“Schleunes’ work embodies her commitment to arts and culture in Greensboro and beyond. Using literature, oral histories, music, song and historical documents, Schluenes is devoted to creating original adaptations of history and literature to be performed on stage. In 1981, she founded the Touring Theatre of North Carolina to meet the need for using literature in performances for children to provide substance. Through her works, Schluenes has created educational theatre to address and create community dialogue on difficult subject matter.”
The Touring Theatre has performed for more than 155,000 people since July 1999, with Schleunes producing more than 50 original works.
Cue applause.
