$75 million on the table

Posted by AG under: Downtown; Economic development .

Consumers spend about $43 million a year with downtown retailers and restaurants. But a recent market analysis, commissioned by Downtown Greensboro, Inc., determined that the area should generate about $118 million a year. The difference — $75 million — awaits entrepreneurs, especially independent retailers.

DGI’s consultant spotted these retailing opportunities:
• Juniors fashion apparel.
• Bike store.
• Runners’ store.
• Gardening shop.
• Baby boutique.
• Maps and historical memorabilia.
• Leather goods and accessories.

There’s $75 million walking around downtown, unspent. Who will be the next retailer to tap it?

I have to say that I think downtown Greensboro needs a small grocery store/market. Why would anyone live downtown when they have to get in their car to buy groceries? If Greensboro wants to support urban living downtown, people need to be within walking distance of a good market.
