Keeping Greensboro moving

“The 20-minute city.”

That was Greensboro in 1980s and ’90s, when you could get just about anywhere in town pretty darn fast. Thanks to decades of strong transportation planning and community support, the city’s transportation infrastructure managed to stay a few steps ahead of demand.

We don’t hear about “the 20-minute city” so much anymore. More intersections are busier, more often. The roads are a little bumpier. People are more interested than ever in walking and mass transit, but 600 miles of streets lack sidewalks, and ridership on city buses is about to double that of 2004.

The Transportation Bond, on the ballot November 4, will address more than 70 transportation projects in Greensboro. Roads, bridges, sidewalks and trails throughout the city are slated for repairs, upgrades and improvements. Check out this map and this Web site for more details.

Some hear “Transportation Bond” and think of tires on pavement. Here’s another way to think of it: quality of life and necessities for a better economic future.
