Home run for A&T
Posted by AG under: Economic development; Education; High-tech .
A Greensboro university has moved into the research big leagues.
North Carolina A&T State University is the lead institution in a five-year, $18.5 million National Science Foundation grant to develop metal medical devices that will biodegrade when no longer needed by the body. Funding is guaranteed for 10 years, with the possibility of a 10-year extension.
This is the stuff of the future, but it’s happening now in nanotechnology research that A&T already is doing under project director Dr. Jag Sankar. The University of Pittsburgh and the University of Cincinnati are the partner institutions.
Among the direct impacts: A&T will create a new department of bioengineering that will grant bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The other universities will collaborate in the degree programs as well.
Who will this biomedical research ultimately benefit? Children with birth defects and cardiovascular patients, for starters.
With this news, A&T paves the way for future biomedical and nanotech opportunities to build a new economy for Greensboro and the region.
