As others see us

You might have seen that column by Orlando, Florida, resident Linda Chapin in Sunday’s News & Record. She has adult children living in Greensboro as well as Orlando, and they all love where they live.
In the column, first published in the Orlando Sentinel, she lets the Florida Chapins and the Carolina Chapins square off in a hometown bragfest. As a reasonable mom who recently visited Greensboro, she recognizes that each locale has a lot going for it.
Her summation really got our attention.
Greensboro, she wrote, is “a city that values its history and its beauty.” She found “very few strip malls” (perhaps that relative) and noticed that “utilities are underground.” (Some are, but not nearly enough.)
“Shade trees line the wide, well-designed boulevards. North Carolina believes in preserving the past and investing in the future,” she concludes.
Simply by visiting and observing, Chapin gets it. This is the Greensboro we want others to know.
The only thing she didn’t mention is that air service is pretty good between Greensboro and Orlando. And the planes fly north, too. The welcome mat is out.
