Real entrepreneurship

Starting a business is never easy, even in the best of situations. But start a business in a war-torn, Third World country? Who in their right mind would do that?

Sarah Chayes, that’s who.

The former National Public Radio reporter stepped away from the microphone in 2002 to help rebuild Afghanistan. To counteract the role of opium in the economy, she started the Arghand cooperative, which makes skin-care products from locally grown fruits, nuts and botanicals.

Chayes brings her story to Greensboro at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when she speaks in Room 160 of UNCG’s Bryan Building. Her topic is “Soap Factory in a Shooting Gallery,” or “How to Build and Expand a Business in Southern Afghanistan.”

The free program is part of UNCG’s BELL program (Building Entrepreneurial Learning for Life).

Knowing of Sarah Chayes’ obstacles — and success — in Afghanistan makes Greensboro’s entrepreneurial environment look even more fertile.
