Monumental

Greensboro sculptor Jim Barnhill has worked for the past year getting General Nathanael Greene ready for Wednesday. That’s when the 11.5-foot sculpture of Greensboro’s namesake will be unveiled in downtown Greensboro, standing on a pedestal in the roundabout at Greene and McGee Streets.

The festivities will begin with fifes and drums about 6 p.m., followed at 6:30 with remarks by Shirley Frye and others including Mayor Yvonne Johnson. General Greene will make his public debut around 7 p.m., high atop 30,000 pounds of granite.

Barnhill says he’s come to know General Greene pretty well during this project, which was funded by the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation. And the more he learns about Nat Greene, the greater his esteem for the Quaker who was known as George Washington’s right-hand man.
